I’m all for biracial people standing up and representing this biracial life on their own terms, but Tinashe just needs to go sit down somewhere & shut up.
First off, why did your mama name you Tinashe? What kind of name is that? Never mind. Secondly, I vaguely know who you are. I think I may have heard one song by you on that one album with that one artist from back in the day that I can’t recall, but that’s about it. Now, I did watch one of your videos on YouTube showing off your home studio in your bedroom. I thought that was rather impressive, so I give you props on that. But other than that, I don’t know much about you & quite frankly, it’s a bunch of people on the internet who probably know just as much about you as I do. I really do not think colorism is a factor in your scenario as to why you believe your record sales apparently suck. Maybe you just suck. Not saying you do, but maybe you do. Who knows. I’m not really all that interested in finding out if you actually suck or not at this point in the game.
Tinashe, you know who doesn’t suck that just happens to be biracial?
Drake doesn’t suck. Mariah Carey doesn’t suck. Bob Marley definitely didn’t suck. Sade doesn’t suck. Amerie used to not suck, not sure how she’s doing today. Alicia Keys doesn’t suck. J. Cole doesn’t suck. Lenny Kravitz doesn’t suck. Tameka “Tiny” Harris, once upon a time she used to didn’t suck. Bruno Mars definitely doesn’t suck. KeKe Wyatt used to not suck, not sure how she’s doing today. And I’m sure it’s a few others I’ve missed that either don’t suck or used to not suck at one point in their career. But the thing about these people is, I honestly can’t recall any of these people using the fact that they are biracial as an excuse as to why the knee grows weren’t fucking with their music.
I’m not a musician. I’ve never had dreams of being a musician beyond me singing in the shower or my car when I’m stuck in traffic, but I imagine that one’s genetic makeup is not that big of a deal as compared to whether or not one has the talent to put some good music together to make people feel a certain type of way.
“There’s colorism involved in the black community, which is very apparent. It’s about trying to find a balance where I’m a mixed woman, and sometimes I feel like I don’t fully fit into the black community; they don’t fully accept me, even though I see myself as a black woman. That disconnect is confusing sometimes. I am what I am.” — Tinashe
Tinashe, welcome to the wonderful world of being a mulatto where we live a country that is obsessed with only viewing things strictly in terms of black & white. Get used to it. The black community at large is not about to change its position on how THEY feel about people like you & I, but regardless, knee grows will still buy your music if you can produce some great shit worthy of listening to. Like I tell all biracials, especially you mulattos out there, stop giving a fuck about how black people FEEL about you & just do you. But since doing you just happens to mostly entail being a musician, you need to hit the studio & do you better because the you that you are currently doing isn’t working out to well…and you being a high yellow biracial thang ain’t got shit to do with it.
